To get to know Aurora’s longest-serving accounting practice, Webware.io had a chat with the three partners Howard Render, Charles Dolman and Ernesto Sperti, who took Render & Partners LLP from its roots as a small, local firm, to a mid-sized full-service professional firm that is now the largest accounting firm in Aurora.

Where did you grow up and go to school?

Howard Render: I grew up in North York, attended high school there and then York University after that.

Charles Dolman: Me too, however, I went to the University of Toronto.

Ernesto Sperti: I grew up in North York as well, attended St. Basil High School and then York University. I also spent some of my childhood in Italy.

 

Why did you choose to go into business?

HR: To provide a meaningful service to our clients in a fair way so that they get value and we make a living.

CD: I enjoy helping people, and it also helps me to earn a living.

ES: I am in this type of business to be able to help clients while having time to spend with my family.

 

How long have you been in business?

HR: I have been in this business for thirty-eight years.

CD: I have been in accounting for around twenty-eight years.

ES: I have been in public accounting for eighteen years.

 

What are your responsibilities as partners in the business?

HR: I am the managing partner of office.

CD: I am a partner in the accounting office.

ES: My responsibilities are to ensure our clients are getting the best service possible. My responsibilities also include staff training and mentoring.

 

As owners, what are the most important decisions you face on a daily basis?

HR: Getting our clients their best bang for their buck in terms of what we can do for them, whether it be income tax or helping with their lenders.

CD: How to apply Canadian accounting procedures best and comply with tax law.

ES: How to continuously improve client service is something I am always working on.

 

What are the top three skills you use to perform your job?

HR: Communication, technical skills especially regarding tax, and the ability to provide honest answers to difficult questions.

CD: Applying technical accounting, taxation, and communication skills.

ES: Communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.

 

What parts of your work do you find most enjoyable?

HR: I wake up excited every day as it gives me another opportunity to deal with clients to help problem solve.

CD: I enjoy dealing with people and helping them manage their finances.

ES: Helping clients solve any problem and mentoring the next generation.

 

What do you do in your non-work time?

HR: I love to work out, travel, and read.

CD: I enjoy playing ice hockey, listening to music, and traveling.

ES: I watch most sports, play soccer, and I’m currently learning to play the guitar

 

Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?

HR: Amazon!

CD: Our clients who are successful.

ES: Any business that turns an idea into a great success (Apple, Facebook, etc.)

 

What has been the most satisfying moment in your life?

HR: Getting married, having children, and then a granddaughter.

CD: The two proudest moments of my life have been becoming a father and becoming a partner in an accounting firm.

ES: Being a husband and the joys of fatherhood are two moments that provide tremendous amounts of satisfaction to me.
